Building playgrounds. Serving in soup kitchens. Painting schools.
You won’t find those tasks in any job description at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL), but they are part of what makes our employees so special.
In 2015, our employee volunteer force, known as Blue Corps℠, logged nearly 60,000 hours volunteering for 1,500 causes and organizations that touched their hearts.
BCBSIL not only encourages employees to give back to their communities, but we make it easy for everyone to find an opportunity near them. We provide employees with a database of volunteer activities and even offer transportation to some of them. All of that has resulted in an upswing in volunteering – a whopping 54 percent increase from 2014.
Volunteer of the Year
“I volunteer because of my belief that we all have a personal responsibility to give back to our communities.” – Greg Else, BCBSIL Volunteer of the Year
As a child, Greg Else, our 2015 Volunteer of the Year, went with his family to soup kitchens, nursing homes and food pantries. That early experience turned Greg into a lifelong volunteer. In the 13 years he has worked at BCBSIL, Greg has logged more than 1,000 volunteer hours. But he isn’t just a volunteer; he’s a leader in the company’s volunteer movement. He co-founded the In-Abled Disability Awareness Business Resource Group and has worked extensively as a leader in the company’s annual Employee Giving Campaign. Greg is most proud of bringing the annual Chicago Cares Serve-a-Thon to BCBSIL in 2003.
